The Shiawassee Cannibal Ruled Competent For Trial.

Corunna Mi. – Mark David Latunski, 50, who allegedly murdered and ate part of Kevin Bacon, 25, in December of 2019 was ruled competent Monday, by 66th District Court Judge Ward Clarkson, to stand trial.

Judge Clarkson scheduled the pretrial examination for October 23, 2020, at 8:30 am.

Latunski appeared by video from the Michigan Center For Forensic Psychiatry where the Judge ordered him to be housed for now.

Latunski, who has been called a manipulator, was ruled, on February 27, incompetent to stand trial and ordered to be sent and treated at the Center For Forensic Psychiatry.

Mark Latunski had appeared by video in front of Judge Ward Clarkson on Thursday, the 27th. The order signed by Judge Clarkson states that “the State Department of Mental Health is appointed medical supervisor of Latunski course of treatment and shall fulfill all requirements established by law.”

The order states that Latunski shall undergo treatment to render him competent to stand trial.

On Monday, Judge Clarkson, after reading a lengthy report from the Michigan Center For Forensic Psychiatry decided that Latunski is now competent to stand trial.

Latunski’s attorney, Doug Corwin from the Shiawassee’s Public Defenders Office had filed a motion for the Judge to halt proceedings to allow Latunski to be examined by another psychiatrist. The Judge stated that the case would proceed and that if the attorney wanted his client to see another psychiatrist that was fine but a pretrial examination was still being held on October 23.

So, who is Latunski and what is he accused of?

It is alleged that Latunski met up with Kevin Bacon, on Christmas Eve 2019, after the two met up on Grindr. The last time Bacon was seen alive was on Dec. 24, 2019 in Swartz Creek Mi. before his date.

When Bacon did not contact his family on Christmas, the family filed a missing persons report and asked for help on social media.

On December 29, 2019, MSP Lt. David Keiser stated that Bacon was found deceased on December 28, 2019, in the early morning by the Michigan State Police at Latunski’s house in the 700 block of West Tyrell near Morrice. Lt Keiser stated that a subject is expected to be arraigned on an open murder charge Monday in Shiawassee County District Court. Latunski is being held on an open murder charge.

The MSP posted Dec. 28, the following on their Bay County Twitter account. "Missing person Kevin Bacon has been located. MSP has been working with our local law enforcement partners. Kevin bacon was located deceased early this morning at a house in Bennington Twp. Shiawassee County. A 50 yr. old male from Bennington Twp. has been lodged for open murder."

It wasn’t until January 6, 2020 that we learned in court the horrendous deeds that Latunski was being charged with.

On December 30, 2019, Michigan State Sergeant James Moore had stated in sworn testimony, “On December 28, 2019, Police Sergeant received a call for assistance for assistance from Clayton Township Police Department. The assistance was for a welfare check at the address of 703 West Tyrell Road, Morrice Michigan, Bennington Township, Shiawassee County. The information was that a missing person named Kevin Bacon may have been at that residence, and the request was made to check for the well being of Kevin Bacon, and if he was at the residence.

Troopers contacted the residence and spoke to with the resident who lived there by the name of Mark David Latunski. Mark David Latunski granted permission for Michigan State Police to enter, and to search the residence for Mr. Bacon.

A search of the residence resulted in finding Mr. Bacon hanging deceased and naked from the ceiling.

Mr. Latunski was placed into custody, at which point I was called at my house. I responded to the scene along with other detective sergeants. An interview of Mr. Latunski was conducted on the morning of Dec. 28, 2019. Under Miranda warnings, Mr. Latunski admitted to the murder of Mr. Bacon.

Mr. Latunski stated he used a knife, stabbed him in the back one time, then slit his throat.

Afterwards, Mr. Latunski stated he wrapped rope around the ankles of Mr. Bacon, and hung him from the rafters on the ceiling. In addition, Mr. Latunski admitted to using a knife to cut off Mr. Bacon’s testicles which he later consumed.”

Latunski, according to his LinkedIn Account, “The Profesional Mark D. Latunski is self-employed and received a B.S. in Chemistry from Central Michigan University. He worked in the barrier resins division of The Dow Chemical Corporation in Midland, Michigan characterizing the rates of decomposition of polymeric materials. He obtained an M.S. in Chemistry from Iowa State University of Science and Technology while studying Physical Organic Chemistry and the mechanisms of free radical processes. Mark Latunski embarked on industrial chemistry as a formulary chemist developing environmentally-friendly inks and coatings. As a Research Chemist for Flint Ink, he holds multiple patents for lithographic inks. In 2007, he joined American Chemical Technologies as their Lab Manager and focusses his technical efforts on all aspects of the tribology of biodegradable and fire-resistant lubricants.

The other side of Latunski is more complicated. On his Social Media Accounts such as facebook and on male dating sites Latunski uses the alias Olykos Kai Lukas.

Latunski’s Shiawassee County criminal record shows that Latunski was charged on September 19, 2013, with KIDNAPPING-CUSTODIAL INTERFERENCE and after a competency hearing, it was determined on May 15, 2014, in front of Judge Terrance Dignan that Latunski was found incompetent to stand trial. Latunski was ordered to undergo treatment.

On January 14, 2015, Latunski was found competent to stand trial but according to court records, on 02/10/15, a proceeding was held in front of Judge Dignan and the case was dismissed by party, without prejudice. The record states the case closed.

On November 26, 2019, the MSP handled a report on a man that claimed he had been together with Latunski on a consensual meeting. However, things got weird and after allegedly being chained in Latunski’s basement the man was able to escape naked except for a cape. No one was arrested in that incident.
