Investigation Update: A loss of life during any police encounter is tragic. As always, all incidents that involve a department member discharging their firearm are immediately investigated. Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, is committed to ensuring this investigation is thorough, swift, and impartial.
Preliminary investigation indicates that at 6:34 p.m. on 11/2, two Flint Post troopers encountered an armed male who was walking on Essex St. near Pasadena Ave. The male immediately began to flee, with troopers giving verbal commands to stop and drop his gun. The troopers pursued him on foot and one trooper deployed his taser, which proved to be ineffective, and the suspect continued to flee. In total, the troopers ordered him to drop the gun at least 7 times. They then utilized their duty pistols, striking him. They rendered first aid at the scene until the suspect was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A Glock pistol with a loaded extended magazine was recovered from the scene. The investigation remains ongoing and once complete, all information, including video evidence, will be turned over to the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
